Setting Your Sights on the Millennium
By Leslie Jacobs, M.D., and William Shoemaker, M.D.

Why is it that clothes seem to fit more tightly in January? And why do the numbers on the scale creep higher and higher at this time of year? The scientist in me always looks for ways to explain phenomena such as these. Clothes may have shrunk. Perhaps scales are somehow affected by a gravitational pull from the moon and sun during the winter solstice? Unfortunately, the most plausible explanations often elude us because of their simplicity. Or, as in this instance, we just don't want to face the truth. In reality, it was our willpower that shrank, and the only gravitational effect was the one pulling those holiday treats into our mouths.

The magnitude of the problem is staggering. By recent statistics, obesity affects 25 percent of children and adolescents and nearly 55 percent of adults. The numbers quite literally swell over the winter holidays, as many people tend to overeat and under-exercise. It is perhaps for this reason that the most common resolution made each year is to lose weight. Fortunately, the products available through Wellness International Network can assist people in reaching this and many other resolutions in preparation for the year 2000. I've outlined several steps that you can take to ensure that the New Year's Resolutions you set on January 1, 1999 will be in effect well into the next millennium.

RESOLVE to reach your weight goals. If you find yourself with a few extra inches or pounds this year, then why not combat the problem in a logical manner? Start by stimulating your body's brown adipose tissue. The resulting thermogenic state will promote the conversion of calories to heat, thus helping you attain your sought-after goal. You will also notice an increase in energy and a decreased appetite as an additional benefit. There are many supplements known to promote better utilization of carbohydrates for cellular energy while diminishing the conversion of excess carbohydrates to fat. It doesn't take a rocket scientist (or a physician for that matter) to realize that when you decrease the number of calories eaten and increase the number of calories burned, the net effect must be conducive to weight loss.

RESOLVE to improve your stamina and body contours. Even if you seem to be at your ideal weight, do you have the shape that you desire? Are your waist and hips flabby, or firm? Are your muscles well defined, or virtually nonexistent to the casual observer? If you want more from your body, you must give it the tools to make these changes. Certainly, exercise is one of these tools, but this does not mean that you must spend endless hours each week in the gym. Work smarter and not harder. I believe that if you are going to take the time to break a sweat, you should maximize the benefits to your body. Finally, reach a higher workout level. The results can be astonishing and there is no substantial time commitment.

RESOLVE to give your body the nutrients it needs, both inside and out. Let's face it, the majority of us cannot be trusted to eat properly under the best of circumstances. A fact that certainly does not improve over the holidays. But when you really think about it, there is nothing more sensible than maintaining one's health through proper nutrition. This will insure that you are receiving the antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients that you require in a formulation of the highest quality with optimum absorption levels.
RESOLVE to look better. Even though you're another year older, you certainly don't have to look it! And—this is specifically for the men out there—let's not be intimidated by the words "skin care." Ten years from now, I'm sure you'd rather hear people describe your appearance as "youthful" rather than "distinguished."

Everyone desires more energy, more vitality, and better health. Make 1999 the year that you finally achieve these goals. Take all of the products and witness the results. And remember, don't be selfish! Others around you have the same desires and dreams, so share your products with them. Before you know it, you'll not only be increasing your chances for optimum health, but also increasing your ability to achieve the financial resolutions for the year as well!
